The Romans ate a varied diet consisting of vegetables, meat and fish. The poorest Romans ate quite simple meals, but the rich were used to eating a wide range of dishes using produce from all over the Roman Empire.
They ate 3 meals everyday. * Breakfast - ientaculum. * Lunch - prandium. * Dinner - cena. Cena was the main meal of the day.
The Romans did not sit down at a tables to eat their meals. They just lay down on the sofa. So they basically ate lying down! And did you know they ate most of the food with their fingers! But for soups they had spoons, and when they needed to cut something they used their small knives.
The Romans kept animals for their meat. The rich ate beef, pork, wild boar, venison, hare, guinea fowl, pheasant, chicken, geese, peacock, duck, and even door mice which were served with honey! But the poorer Romans didn’t eat as much meat as the rich, but it still featured in their diet!
Bread was a staple part of the Roman diet. Three grades of bread were made, and only rich ate refined white bread. Pottage, a thick porridge-like stew, was made from corn, millet or wheat. To this the Romans would add cooked meats, sauces and spices. The Romans liked cheese which was mainly made from goat’s milk and eggs.
Here are some things that I found. Romans houses were so well built. If they were poor. They lived in a small apartment. In a apartment it contained only 2 rooms at the most. People used the apartment only for sleeping because they had to work ,visit the baths because in the apartment there was no running water. And they ate not in their house because it wasn’t safe to cook.
Rich people’s house was very different from the poor people’s house. The rich people lived in a single storey house which were built around a central hall called atrium. Atrium was useful because when it rains it could collect the waters. The house was made with stones or bricks.
In the rich house in the main room was mosaics. Also it was decorated with coloured plaster wall. The mosaics had to be done by experts and it was very expensive.
Houses also had water pipes. But no water pipes in poor people houses. Lead pipes brought water to the houses. Pipes sizes was different. Some of them were large and they had to give more money if they bought large pipes.
Breakfast: This would be eaten early, as soon as the sun rose and would have bread and fresh fruit.
Lunch: After 12 pm, When the sun is above us. A little cooked meat, ham or salami, salad, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, vegetables and bread.
Dinner - This would begin at about four in the afternoon and could continue into the night! The beggining would be either a salad or dish of small fish. The main course was fish, cooked meat and vegetables would be served next.
Desesrt: The dessert would have fresh fruit and cheese. Sometimes small cakes with honey would be served too.
Maybe I will write something else! See you tommorrow!! (:
