Amina and Ulgen

  1. Hi Ulgen!!!!
Here are some things I found.
    Roman slaves
Slaves were people who were frequently captured in battle and sent back to Rome to be sold. However, abandoned children could also be brought up as slaves. The law also stated that fathers could sell their older children if they were in need of money. Once bought, a slave was a slave for life. A slave could only get their freedom if they were given it by their owner or if they bought their freedom. To buy your freedom, you had to raise the same sum of money that your master had paid for you – a virtually impossible task. If a slave married and had children, the children would automatically become slaves. Young children were sometimes killed by their parents rather than let them become slaves. A slave’s day began at daybreak.
When his master awoke, a slave would be expected to assist dressing him. When the day properly began, a whole group of slaves started set tasks, such as walking children to school, cleaning a villa, washing clothes, tidying a garden etc. A group of slaves would work in a kitchen preparing the day’s meals. When a rich man and his family bathed at home, slaves would help out by drying them once they had finished and dressing them. When a master moved around, slaves would carry him in a litter. When a master entertained, slaves would ensure a constant supply of food and drink. If guests had to return home and it was dark, a slave or slaves would walk ahead of them with a lighted torch.
The slaves had no rights in the city all they did is work for their masters. They did all the hard work in the house. The master could sell or do many horrible things to the slave. Every master who wanted incomes looked after the health of his animals and slaves. The slave’s food was made out bread with spices out of salted olives, garlic or onion. They also ate bean porridge with olive oil. They worked from early in the morning till late at night. They slept in small room’s 2 or 3 people in each one. When being sold

    Roman food
The rich Ancient Romans enjoyed their food. Roast peacock and ostriches and the like, would be provided. Breakfast (the Romans called this jentaculum) was taken in the master's bedroom and usually consisted of a slice of bread or a wheat pancake eaten with dates and honey. Wine was also drunk. Lunch (the Romans called this prandium) was eaten at about 11.00 a.m. and consisted of a light meal of bread, cheese and possibly some meat. In many senses, everything was geared up towards the main meal of the day - cena. This was eaten in the late afternoon or early evening. If the master of the house had no guests, cena might take about one hour. If he did have guests, then this meal might take as long as four hours. A light supper was usually eaten just before the Romans went to bed, consisting of bread and fruit. The Romans were usually not big meat eaters and a lot of their normal meals involved vegetables, herbs and spices together with a wheat meal that looked like porridge. Many meals were served with sauces.
One particular favorite was garum which was made by mixing up fish waste with salt water and leaving it for several weeks until it was ready for use. Sauces made from vinegar, honey, pepper, herbs and spices were also popular. The Romans seemed to be very keen on sweet food and drink. One of the favored drinks was called mulsum which was a mixture of boiled wine and honey. One sign that a meal or a banquet had gone down well was if guests asked for bags to take homes dishes that they had enjoyed. This in particular pleased a master as it showed to everyone who was there that at least some of the courses on offer had been well received.
Most food was either boiled or fried in olive oil. Very few homes needed an oven as so little food was roasted.

  3. Hi Amina here are some things ı fuond out about the roman foods.
There was a big difference between the food the wealthy romans ate and the food that the poor romans ate.The poor romans ate very simple food. They ate bread, porridge and a sort of vegetable soup that was made of lentils, turnips, onions and beans. They also ate local food like figs and olives. They rarely ate meat.Rich romans could buy many different foods from all over the Empire. They used their food to show off how wealthy they were.Rich romans served expensive and unusual food to show off.The strange food included delicacies such as dormice stuffedwithpine kernels or boiled pigs and roast peacock.Their guests were more impressed when there unusual food.Bread was baked in the ashes of the fire. Some large houses had special ovens built in them on to the walls.Their favorite sauce was called liquamen. The sauce was made from gone of fish guts. The poor romans had bread dry or dripped in wine or water.Sometime olives cheese was sprinkled on the bread. The rich romans ate fresh meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and bread and they used honey to sweeten food because sugar wasnt found yet.Slaves cut their food for them as there was no knives and forks so they ate with their fingers.A wet towel was handy to tidy up after a meal. They had a meal called luncheon which was a cold meal that they ate at 11 o’ clock.Lunch was bread, salad, olives, cheese, fruits, nuts and cold meat left over from the night before.

  4. Slaves were very important to the Romans .Without slaves, the wealthy of Rome wouldnt be the same. They were people who were captured in battle and sent back to Rome to be sold. However children could also be brought up as slaves. The law also said that fathers could sell their older children if they were in need of money.A wealthy Roman would buy a slave in a market place. Young males with a trade could fetch quite a sum.Once bought, a slave was a slave for life.one simply because they had a trade and their age meant that they could last for quite a number of years.Someone who was a cook by trade could be very expensive.
